Out of Commission: Just a little update…
At the end of March 2016 I took a short hiatus, a sabbatical of sorts. Well that it didn’t turn out like that.
I was planning to do a show, travel, visit family and return to work at the end of August ’16 for the start of the new school year. But on August 3, at the beginning of a visit to my son in Seattle, I lifted a suitcase out of an old-fashioned cage elevator. It was the beginning of a series of unfortunate events.
My back was out. Unable to walk or stand for more than 15 minutes at a time, I underwent numerous procedures to try and get the bone and cartilage off my spinal column. Eventually in April 2017 I had spinal surgery. It was a success! After the recommended recovery time I took a week cruise to Alaska.
It was an amazing trip. The Hubbard Glacier has the most extraordinary shades of blue! Back home on the Central Coast I was settling in and getting stoked to start working again. On July 26th 2017 I had a headache. It was a curl-up-and-die kind of headache. I didn’t know it but my brain was leaking.
This headache came and went. I thought it was a migraine. It was an AVM, Arterial Venous Malformation, and I was born with it. Basically it is a tangle of the in and out of the of the blood vessels. When enough pressure builds up it goes pop and you have an aneurysm. Most folks die by age 35.
The craniotomy was on October 5, 2017. The tangle in my occipital lobe and had gotten close to my visual cortex. The surgeon, Dr. Zauner in Santa Barbara, is fabulous surgeon and a kind man. I am still recovering. Although I am not yet able to drive, I have begun to read again and today I typed this J
